Come and meet our very own reindeer

We have wanted reindeer for a very long time and now they have arrived, and we can’t wait for you to meet them.

These are very special Welsh Reindeer who will be visiting us at Backford.

Our Reindeer eat mostly grass, lichen, moss and fungi and straw. Reindeer are the only deer species in which both the male and female can grow antlers. Their antlers fall off every year and re-grow again. They can live for up to 15 years in the wild and domesticated reindeer can live for as long as 20 years.

The reindeer was first domesticated in Siberia and Scandinavia. Since then, reindeer have been used for transport, for example pulling sleds. Just like Santa does on Christmas Eve. When reindeer walk they click, it’s a tendon in their foot passing over a bone. This is to help them find each other if it’s snowing heavily. You cannot see their wings as they are only allowed to fly on Christmas Eve 😊

Contact us for enquiries for hiring the reindeer for Christmas visits.
